My entry to the first colour battle of 2012 with facing off against who finished before I actually got around to starting & put in an absolutely kick ass entry which left me feeling like a straightforward colour job would be a waste of time - because I'd lose!
So here we are with my current entry and it is a series of experiments for me so even if I get my butt kicked I've at least learned something (hopefully) - I've tried to do the following:
1: Utilise a limited palette (flats aside the entire piece is coloured with just 3 shades of blue and white including the lightening and shadow).
2: Use ALMOST exclusive cut edge highlighting (I tend to be a more painterly renderer generally and avoid friskets - something I'm trying to practice).
3: Get a bright image with lightening across strongly on a white background - and use the white to help the image strike out.
I think I've achieved all of my goals on this piece... but I still prefer Mike's and am willing to admit when I think I'm beat!
